Many classic car events have a competition for best period clothing. Often people search come up with brilliant costumes of the same era of the vehicle presented. No matter what you think, this is also the case in the picture above. The owners of the car in the background appeared in front of the judges as you can see: the driver dressed correct in the 'average'way and the co-driver in space suit, which seemed quite inappropiate. However, the spaceman explained to the judges that his costume was a tribute to the inventor of the very first functional space suit, the spanish engineer Emilio Herrera, who invented an advanced "stratosphere flying suit" in 1935. It was tested in an airless chamber and included features like a microphone communicator. Why Herrera developed this space equipment twenty six years prior to the first manned space flight is a miracle, but fact is that this invention was patented and later bought by the russian government when the space race started in 1957. In the photo 3 you can see the usual "space ship" of the 30s: a beautiful Citroen C6 "coupe doctor" in lovely 'timewarp' condition. (report & photos Francisco Carríon) |
