The world’s oldest private collection of automobiles as a guest of RETRO CLASSICS: the Den Haag based Louwman Museum presents some of the most precious historic objects in the course of a special show in Stuttgart.
RETRO CLASSICS®, Europe’s largest classic car exhibition, will open doors for the 16th time at the end of March 2016. On 125,000 square metres exhibition space admirers, collectors and dealers will gather from all over the world. An entertaining supporting programme and first-class special shows as the presentation of Louwman Museum will once again accompany the event.
Louwman Museum is much more than an ordinary car museum. Some of the items of the collection are like time machines and establish a palpable connection to the past. The collection’s history began in 1934. Around 230 antique and classic cars have been added to the collection in the meantime. Two generations of the Louwman family have collected the world’s most beautiful sports and racing cars, celebrities’ automobiles and some automotive movie stars like the taxi from “The Godfather” and an Aston Martin which appeared in the James Bond movies “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball”.
A selection of the extraordinary automobiles of the collection will be on display as a part of a RETRO CLASSICS special show. One of the highlights is a Mercedes-Benz Type Nürburg 500. The previous owner was the last German emperor Wilhelm II., who lived in exile in the Netherlands at that time. The saloon car weighs nearly 3,000 kilograms, primarily due to the fact that it is lightly armoured. Chassis and suspension have been strengthened. The car also has under-floor heating. However, the most interesting detail of this car is the interior communication system, which allowed the passenger to relay instructions to the driver without actually speaking to him. Buttons on a small console in the back were used to activate dashboard lights with directives such as: “Fast – Slow – Stop – Left – Right –Turn – Home”.
Further legendary cars await the visitors. Illustrious names as Benz 5 HP Phaeton, Maserati 8CM Monoposto Grand Prix Car, Benz Prinz-Heinrich, Talbot Lago 150 SS Figoni & Falaschi Coupé (Teardrop), Jaguar D-Type XKD359, Cyklon 6 HP Cyklonette, Crane Simplex and also the electrically driven Cygnet Baby Swan Car, probably the first car ever made in India. Each car tells its very own story and adds an independent contribution to history. Each car mirrors automotive culture. On display from 17 March 2016 in the Messe Stuttgart exhibition halls.
