One of the people who visited our stand at the recent Rétromobile was Eldon Guay from Calgary, Canada. He is a sculpturer, who likes to work with contrasting materials like carrara marble and stainless steel. You will also find a sculpture of his other hobby: a Bugatti Type 57. Interestingly enough finished in marble alone without any metal additions.
The metal came in anyway when he decided to start his own production of front and rear brake drums equally suited for the Type 57 Series I & II and for the Type 57S. Being an artist and a car afficionado he went to great length to create exact reproductions of the original ones. Both in appearance and tech specs. The process started with making a 3D scans of the originals which were compared with the original Molsheim drawings. For the production he is making use of solid alloy plate which is machined on a CNC bench. Likewise the cast iron linings are made. The liner will be shrunk in a bath of liquid nitrogen and then pressed into the drum and torqued with 16 stainless steel screws just like with the originals.
A little video about the process can be found at Precisio Fabricati.
