Les from Auckland, New Zealand found this photo at a local exhibition about the First World War. The photo shows tired British (despite the German helmet) soldiers who try to make a little fun in the devastated Cambrai, October 1918. Probably short after the battle of Cambrai, 8-10 October. Les wonders: can anyone ID the car in this photograph which was one of many sympathetically "colourised" WWI photographs in the excellent Great War Exhibition currently on here in New Zealand since 2014 (and until 2018) by Sir Peter Jackson (the movie film director)..? editor: we're looking at a one cylinder chaindriven car with a most interesting bathtub, barrelsided two seater body. Some observers presume that the body may be of a later date than the chassis that we roughly put in a 1907-1910 window. Shoot us if we're wrong. Thank God that gruesome War was nearly over... |
