Almost everybody knows about the whereabouts of the famous "Swan Car" discovered in India and now exhibited at the Dutch Louwman Museum. Also in this very same museum can be seen its little sister, the electrically driven Cygnet Baby Swan Car, probably the first car ever made in India. But what about the swan car pictured above? This photo was taken in Majorca (Spain) during a carnival in the early 1920s. Although there isn´t any concrete information accompanying the picture - apart from the inscription "1st prize of cars"- the date can be uncovered by seeing the easily recognisable Ford TT of around 1920 which follows our "swan car". Also there is a second picture with the caravan preceded by another 1920s american car. Very little is known about this Spanish swan vehicle; the chassis seems to be american and from the early 1920s, due to the shape of the headlights and the wire wheels. Perhaps a Maxwell or an Overland? Undoubtly it was only a "body disguise" in order to take part in that year´s carnival, but is notable its resemblance with the original "Swan Car" delivered in 1910 to India on a Brooke 25/30 HP chassis. Most probably this was only a coincidence. In those pre-globalization days, a picture of a car from the remote India had very little chances to have reached to a mediterranean island... or not? |
