"As many of you in this hobby, I'm all for original. It's quite easy to make something to modern standards, when not strictly necessary, just because it's easy and accessible. However when it comes to safety, I like little improvements just for that purpose. In this case: visibility!
With the famous London to Brighton Veteran Car Run in mind, I would like to show all of you how you can improve lighting without compromising the looks of your vintage or veteran car. So the early starters can drive around Hyde Park without the risk of not being seen.
Because nobody wants to get rid of their brasswork, or want to permanently modify the brasswork I chose plastic fittings that screw into the original gas outlet of the lamp. The wire can run through the gas line, in order not to be visible. The armature is a home-made unit, very simple lathe work, to resemble a candle-like light. At the back, I masked it with red foil to make it more dim and warm-colored.
I choose LED lights, because they draw very little energy (I run a magneto on this car, so no battery or charging device originally). These LED's use 3.1 Watt each, this times 4 is 12 Watt. Any battery can power these at least as long as you want to drive your veteran car!
Please enjoy the photo album, I would be curious to see and hear how you go about doing this.
If you have oil lamps with a reservoir, the Wheeler Dealers (on youtube, 30 min 30 sec) method is also a good solution for those of you who have access to a 3d printer (it can also be a turned armature of course). This eliminates the need for cables."
