A good friend from the US has this nice one cylinder Aster. In his own words it is huge, heavy and crude giving the impression that it is rather early. But what the age really is? Anyway it is numbered #5723 and the height of the veteran thumper is 24 inches. Bore & stroke is 88 x 100 mm, which results in 608 cc; thus being a 5HP?
Interestingly the engine seems to have seen hardly any use with no visible wear on piston, rings and no wear either on bore. The cooling chambers are clean as if they haven't seen any water. The overall appearance is also of an engine that had a very easy cumberfree life. Unknown how the engine made its way to the United States. We know that Aster engines appeared in various cars including very early Renault and Gladiator cars. It will be interesting to see where this engine would fit in the timeline of Aster.
