The french auction house Osenat will hold an auction on June 18th in Fontainebleau. We checked out their catalogue and found quite some interesting pre-war cars like Bugatti's. But it was the 1927 Turcat-Mery that got our full attention. Those cars are not that often for sale so we checked it out.
Like many automobile companies in the early days of motoring, the company was named after a couple of gentleman. In this case Leon Turcat and his brother in law Alphonse Méry with his brother Simon Méry. They built cars from 1899 on. Their slogan was 'the car for the Connoisseur'. Just after the turn of the century, they started a partnership with the Lorraine-Dietrich company. Which lasted untill WWI. After that period, the company got (like many other factories) in trouble. They did produce some beautiful cars, but unfortunately the company ceized in 1928. This particular car is therefore one of the last built by the company.
We are not really sure how to place the car. It has some looks from a Voisin, but it is clearly something different. The engine is a 2.4 liter engine with overhead camshaft, and will therefore be very good for touring. But might be a bit boring for the serious driver.
The wire wheels look beautiful under the car and give the car extra class, as does the fuel tank on the back. The seats are rather standard but the split window in combination with the angled radiator are beautiful and make it a wannahave.
Our conclusion is that we would be more than happy to park this French piece of art in the garage. Let us see what it will bring on June 18th.
