Thirties American Splendour at Lime Rock
A vibrant selection of pre-war motorcars will soon feature in the up-coming Lime Rock Auction, hosted by Dragone Classic Motorcars in Lakeville, Connecticut on Sunday 3rd September. Boasting eighteen stunning pre-war vehicles for sale, a noteworthy proportion of these listings were manufactured in America during the 1930s.

Expected to fetch a rather healthy sum, the 1931 Cadillac V16 Lancefield Convertible Victoria is a particularly eye-catching example of thirties America that also comes with the highest estimate of the auction at $550,000-$650,000. Modelling sporty lines alongside its long hood and low-cut windshield, this Cadillac possesses coachwork by Lancefield of England, which was promptly displayed to an admiring public at the 1931 Earl’s Court Motor Show in London. Combined with a mighty V16 engine, which during the Great Depression was a very daring throw of ‘caution to the wind’ by General Motors, this 1931 Cadillac is impressively powerful as well as utterly striking in two-tone black and green.

Were a V16 considered too much under the hood but luxurious comfort still very much sought after, an inspired buyer would be unlikely to ignore the 1933 Packard Twelve 1005 Coupe Roadster with its silently running V12 engine. Manufactured by Packard, who are frequently considered the pre-war marque most renowned for build quality in America, the 1933 Twelve 1005 carries bright paintwork over its particularly long 142” wheelbase. The Twelve 1005 is enhanced further with a decorative interior and pretty rear view mirrors mounted atop the dual-mounted spare tyres.

Finally, for those seeking a sportier yet stylish take on motoring from the same decade, a very handsome Auburn 851 SC Phaeton from 1935 wouldn’t go amiss. Able to rapidly power up to 100 mph thanks to its Lycoming straight-eight engine, this Auburn was one of the quickest American cars available in its day. Beautifully finished in tan with flashes of red along its neat bodywork, the 851 SC is a gorgeous motorcar that comes with the brave styling cue of several exhaust pipes extending out from under the hood and down through the fenders – a reminder of the supercharged brute power that would be readily available to its new owner.
