One of the most famous Spyker cars must surely be this 60hp 1903 racing car. Not only was it equipped with the first six-cylinder engine, it was also the first 4x4 automobile. It was especially constructed for the 1903 Paris to Madrid race, but not ready in time. Still, a very good reason fort artist Araun Gordijn to make it the subject of his fifth commissioned Spyker painting. His first one was Goddard's 1907 Peking to Paris car, next came a painting of S.F. Edge's 1922 C4 Record car, followed by the 1919 C1 Aerocoque and of course Tenax, the C4 that in 1921 broke the long distance and duration record then held by Rolls Royce.
But for his new painting of the 4x4 Spyker, Araun faces one problem. He wants to paint it from the right hand side. There are indeed several photos (like the one above) that show it from this side, but Araun hopes there must be better ones around. Of course Araun has the photos that appear in the two standard works about Spyker by Wim Oude Weernink and Vincent van der Vinne. Also the Spyker in the collection of the Louwman Museum has been meticulously sketched and photographed, but Araun thinks that the old period photos might show just that little bit more detail he needs. So the question is easy... who has (or knows about) original photos taken from the right hand side of this 4x4, 6-cylinder Spyker racing car? Even tip-offs that can put Araun in the right direction are most welcome!
