Rough Red and Blue-ish Grey

1921-vauxhall-edmonds-1It's an important year for Vauxhall. Not only was the company founded 110 years ago, but this year also sees the centenary of their greatest model, the 30/98. A fully road-equipped 30/98 was capable of speeds around 85mph, and when stripped for action the company guaranteed a top-speed of more than 100mph for the later overhead-valve model. Today the 30/98 is much sought after, but hard to find since not many were made. Several were exported to Australia, and one of them is now on its way back to the UK, to be auctioned by Richard Edmonds on August 2nd at Toddington Steam Railway, near Cheltenham. It's an 1921 E-type restored in the early 1970s and fitted at that time with an original Velox body, which was swopped for a steering wheel. It's bright red colour earned it the nickname 'Rough Red'. These 30/98s don't come cheap, so if you are looking for a Vauxhall, you might do well to consider a 14/40 model, also from 1921. This one is an M-Type Tourer, a stable mate from the 30/98 and also to be auctioned by Richard Edmunds. Toddington Steam Railway is not far from Prescott, where that same weekend the VSCC will have their annual hillclimb. A good idea to combine the two events.
