This week we received a press release from the organizers of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run (LBVCR). They announce that they have added a "competitive element" to the Run (read the press release here). The object is to drive the odd 60 miles to Brighton within a previously set time frame and prizes are given to those who remain within that time frame. Of course the LBVCR is not a race against time, but still, this new proposition set us thinking... what if people, being people, start driving too fast and accidents happen. That will certainly be a blow to the old car movement. We don't mind a little competition, but we do wonder if the LBVCR is the right place for this kind of action. Certainly the object of the LBVCR is to drive from London to Brighton at a leisurely pace, just as the 1896 run in celebration of the abolishment of the Red Flag Act set out to do.
But it is not only our opinion that counts. Perhaps the "competitive element" may add some extra 'oomph' to the Run. We are curious to hear your views on this matter.
