The VSCC has been visiting Madresfield in Worcestershire (by kind permission of the Trustees of the Madresfield Estate) for sixty-six years, the first event being held in 1947. The event has always been held on the Gloucester Drive, which was also the venue for speed events held before WW11. In later times it was also the location for a scene in the 1965 film “The Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines”, the scene were Fred Emney as a blimpish Colonel confronts a downed flying machine and it’s unfortunate pilot on his driveway. The VSCC event retains the atmosphere of a traditional English picnic with a concours and the tests added to the mix. This year was no exception with the traditional five tests (originally just two) requiring competitors to go forwards and backwards, to go slowly and then quickly, to go forwards and backwards but this time to miss a ‘pork’ chop, to park in boxes, and finally to accelerate and then brake. All difficult to explain, but easier to watch and enjoy! The electic entry list this year included Bugatti Type 22, Alfa Romeo 17/50, Alfa Romeo 2900 Zagato, A type Citroen, Vauxhall 14/40 and 30/98, 1905 De Dion, Alvis 12/50 and Speed 20, various Austin Sevens of course and included the worlds oldest Morgan dating from 1912. It was a quintessential English gathering of old motor-cars and like minded folk and which some think is one of the best events in the VSCC Calendar. Many thanks to the Clerk of the Course Tom Pellow and Chief Marshall Hugh Girvan for making it all happen. |
