The quiz appeared to be very difficult. Not very clever of us to ask year and type as well, while pointing out the makes alone has proved to be difficult enough. Even highly esteemed participating jurymembers (Mark Dawber, Kit Foster, Ariejan Bos) didn't fully agree on the makes of cars in the first row. Let's start with the cars that gave the least problems.
1. 1918-20 Buick Touring
2. Nash or Durant? (see below)
3. 1924/26 Buick Roadster
4. Hupmobile or Auburn or? (see below)
5. 1920/22 Ford Model T Center door Sedan
6. 1924/25 Ford Model T Coupe
7. 1920/24 Hupmobile
8. 1920/23 Ford Model T Coupe
Car number 2 and 4 gave the widest variety in answers. For car number 2 competitors came up with Nash, Durant, Ford and Peerless. Two jurymembers voted for Nash. Ariejan Bos voted for Durant based on these arguments: "...though Nash is mentioned several times (and I must also admit that I didn't consider Nash), the roundness of the top of the radiator shell differs from the quiz picture: the Nash is flattened at the top, the quiz picture is round. If you look at the 1922 Durant, beside the similarity in radiator shape, you may also notice the similarity of the radiator badge." We think Ariejan may have a point here... Both Kit and Mark added that the engine first led them to Nash, yet both concluded that this is the rare Ansted engine as used shortly by Durant.
Regarding car number 4. The names that came up: Hupmobile, Auburn, Hudson, Ford, Essex... Two jurymembers agreed on Hupmobile. Yet Kit Foster came up with quite a different view: 1921 Auburn Beauty Six Coupe. Bodyshape and roundness of the rear end are very much alike. However after studying the original photo we found the most characteristic 'H' radiator badge. So in the end only Ariejan Bos was correct in naming all eight cars. Most impressive!
At least on one point the three participating jurymembers agreed. About the winner! Kit Foster, Ariejan Bos and Mark Dawber all vote for Daniel Ruben who produced 7 out of 8 makes correct. Congratulations Daniel! Very well done!
