Hundred years ago a team of three Rolls-Royce's was entered for the 1913 Alpine Trial, a grueling rally across many mountain passes in the Austrian, Swiss and Italian Alps. Apart from the works team also a privateer, James Radley, entered his 1913 Silver Ghost. He is shown in the picture above. Due to meticulous preparation both works team and privateer did very well. On the first day Radley had completed the course by lunchtime, the three other Silver Ghosts arriving 45 minutes later. The following days the Rolls-Royce team led from the front; in fact James Radley even got frustrated at the slow pace set by the official car. The works team of Friese and Plaford was one of four cars to arrive at the finish without penalty and received a prize from the Archduke of Austria. Radley -who seems to have led the rally most of the way- was awarded (only?) a prize by the City of Trieste. Why was this? What happened? We have searched the web, but cannot find the final results of this 1913 Alpine Trial? Can you tell us?
Anyway, Radley's 1913 Rolls Royce Siver Ghost will be one of forty Silver Ghosts to take part in the recreation of the 1913 Alpine Trial, which is to depart from Vienna this Friday and returning on June 29.
